The Dark Elves really have only one use for Zombies - mine filling. In terms of building, Wisps are simply far superior in both build skill and movement speed. Zombies cannot actually be produced by the Dark Elves but instead of raised by their Sorcerors. Typically this means you would only have access to Zombies, the Dark Elf mine fillers, at tier 3, which is also the same time when Dark Elves get access to Slavehorde to summon Thralls. However, Sorcerors can be taken into battle at the start of the game, allowing the Dark Elf player to start raising Zombies even in tier 1! This is a great asset to Dark Elves, who normally would have to rely on raw mine capturing or tier 3 to start increasing their resource income.

The Zombie is the basic builder and miner of the Plaguelords. Although tougher than other builders, zombies are still fragile and weak. They can cause disease which the Plaguelords race can abuse, punishing those who try to slay them. But really, your zombies should be kept away from any form of combat, especially since Plaguelord zombies do not get the Feast of Garok upgrade that the Undead get. As for building - zombies are the worse available builder in the game, equalling thralls for build skill, but possessing much lower movement speed.

The builder and miner of the Undead. It doesn't build very fast, it has a slow movement speed but it is fairly cheap, can transmit diseases and is one of the more tougher builders around. It can also be upgraded to scavenge resources from freshly slain units, but the likelihood of the Zombie actually ever meeting a dead body is almost never, except in base defence situations, so the ability is somewhat wasted. Moreover, a corpse scavenged by a zombie is a corpse less for the liches to raise.
